How to Make a Realistic Steak Cake

I know the end of summer is fast approaching (sad face), you don’t have to put away the grill just yet.  How about some steak? I mean steak cake.  Lately, I have been having fun making cakes that look like food items.  So far I made a bowl of cereal, french toast with blackberries and pancakes with blueberries and blackberries.  Today I am going to show you how to make a realistic steak cake.  It is so easy to make. Perfect for a grooms cake or for a birthday cake for someone who loves steak.

About a month ago I posted this steak cake to Instagram and Facebook and the response was “is that a cake?” I was quite tickled by this because this is one of the main reasons I started this blog to show how I made cakes just like this.  I really appreciate making simple cakes sometimes, because others takes hours to make. Definitely guilty of underestimating how long some cakes take because I get so caught up in the details.  This steak cake is different because it is so easy, but it looks like you spent alot of time making it (wink, wink).   Learn how to make a realistic steak cake|Easy steak cake tutorial

Steps for making the Steak Cake:

  • Cut out the template and use it to cut out the cake. Trim down the edges to make it rounded.
  • Add ganache or buttercream to the cake and refrigerate.
  • Roll out some fondant (for more details about fondant see my post here) to about a 1/8 inch and cover the cake.Learn how to make a realistic steak cake|Easy steak cake tutorial

Making the Steak Bone and Painting the cake.

  • Using the template cut out the steak bone and attach to cake with shortening.  Roll a piece of sausage and add to the side.
  • Use a Dresden tool make the grill marks. Use the same tool to add holes to the bone.  Learn how to make a realistic steak cake|Easy steak cake tutorial
  • Now it’s time to paint.  Mix some warm brown gel color with vodka.  Don’t add too much gel color a little bit goes a long way.  Using a paintbrush add the color to the fondant a little at a time.  Start out light and get darker as you go along.
  • Then get some black gel color or black edible paint (I love the ones from Edible Art) and lightly paint in the grill marks.  Add in other areas as well to make it look like the cake was on the grill.  Learn how to make a realistic steak cake|Easy steak cake tutorial
  • You can add more or less paint depending on how charred you want your steak to be.  When the paint is dry to the touch, add the cake to a skillet or final cake board for final decorations. I added rosemary as a garnish.Learn how to make a realistic steak cake|Easy steak cake tutorial
  • To make this cake rare or medium rare use a red velvet cake batter.
