Oh my goodness, I am so obsessed with the vintage red truck. I have been dying to make it into cake form. As a sign that I needed to do so, I kept seeing it everywhere, including JoAnn’s, where they had a replica; that I almost bought but could not justify it at the time. Then my neighbor changed her rug for her front door. To what you might ask? You guessed it… The vintage red truck. So, finally, I took the hint and made a vintage red truck cake.
I know what your thinking. It’s not even Christmas yet and I kind of skipped over Thanksgiving. But hear me out… I love Christmas and everything thing about it. In my defense I already made a post about how to make a roasted Turkey cake. Ok good…now onto my Christmas truck.
Of all the sculpted cakes I make, I like car cakes the best. Yes, they take HOURS to make, but to me, it is like sweet therapy. So how is the vintage red truck cake different from the other car cakes you make such as the Pink VW Cake? There no real difference in technique, just design. I approach all car cakes the same, I create a template using whatever photo or blueprint I have as an inspiration and I make everything from there.
The challenge this time is what version of the vintage red truck to make. There are so many versions of the vintage red truck which I quickly figured out. The first step for me was to pick a design to make. However, If this is for a customer, ideally they will choose what they want. If not, find a good template along with these tips for sculpted cakes.
This vintage car cake lights up and is complete with Santa Claus, and snow. Yep… You read that correctly…working lights? I definitely stepped my game with this one. The addition of LED lights makes this car even more festive. In fact, the more I looked at it the more I wanted to add. So I had to step away from the truck. Which was very hard to do.
I made this cake using one 9×13 cake and filled in fenders with fondant. The board was made using foam core and the cake base was covered with black wrapping paper.
At some point I added Santa clause which I made using a mix of modeling chocolate and fondant. Love, love this Santa he’s the right amount of chubbiness and super cute.
Then I added the edible gift sack and removable presents, using modeling chocolate and tied with ribbon.
Santa needed some snow, so I added snow to the board.
Then I added some snow to the trunk. Look at the details in the trunk…

Without further ado here’s the tutorial to make the fondant wreath. Which is why you came right?
Materials Need:
To make the fondant wreath topper knead a piece of green fondant and roll into a circle. Cut with the large circle cutter.
Then using the small circle cutter cut the center of the fondant.
It should look like this. Then use a scissor cut all around starting in the middle.
Make a small red bow, then add to the top of the wreath.
Sprinkle some white pearl dust to the fondant to give it some sparkle.
That’s it… As always happy caking. Don’t forget to pin for later.
